“Words – so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.” -Nathaniel Hawthorne
“Words can inspire. Words can destroy. Words can comfort. Words can wound. Today–please choose yours well.” -Robin Sharma
I hope to write a series of blogs on the epistemology of words that appear on this blog from time to time. I find the collection of reflective words whether they are shared through writing or through speaking to hold a great amount of power that can used to make a great impact. I’m a writer and a speaker because I find freedom in words, and I find a greater sense of myself when I am able to share these words through these platforms.
I was recently asked what is one of my favorite things to do, and this is what I shared. “Anytime I stand up in front of an audience, and get to share my passion for change, and for justice, through the creative platform of spoken word, it’s my favorite thing to do. I love going through both the creative writing process of writing these spoken words, as well as the moments when I am able to stand up in front of openhearted audience and share them. I particularly love having a musician accompany me.”
Words are to me very personal. They are to me like a best friend that I never want to lose or forget. I won’t apologize for them, and I won’t hide them. I won’t sensor them, and I won’t ignore them. It’s words that save me from myself, that heal me from my pain, and remind me of the person I always want to be. Words, I love you.
Please join me in this journey and share with me from time to time, what words mean to you, and how you choose to use them from day to day. I want to learn from your relationship with words, and want to especially hear how words influence and shape who you are.
I Am These Words, These Words I AM
I want to leave you with song, which I have listened to for so many years but going through this process figuring out what words mean to be, it has found a place right next to my heart.
